The Covenant God

Exodus 6:1-9; Hebrews 8

Through the Exodus account the Holy Spirit exhibits for us both the Temporal and Spiritual deliverance of God's people from the wrath of Pharaoh, and the evil taskmasters of sin's hard bondage.

By use of the Lawgiver, God's man Moses, a great type of the Lord Christ, God shows how Christ brings His people from sin's hard bondage, to regeneration, to justice, to dominion and finally to everlasting life.

After identifying Himself to Moses as the Sovereign, and Eternal Great I AM, God now sets His plan in motion. And yet, this plan is not only a mere deleiverence from Egyptian bondage, and Pharaoh's tyanny. It has far reaching implications.

God is calling Israel to a complete transformation, and thus a total restructuring of Hebraic society by particular adherence to His Holy Law.

He will now reveal Himself directly, and experientially, to the Hebrew people as the God of the Covenant, the Eternal Jehovah. Once Israel is again reminded of God's Covenant Name, the liberation process will begin.

Purging Through Affliction

Through a series of Divine commandments given to Pharaoh, and then in the execution of God's Plagues of Judgment upon Egypt, Moses sets the plan of deliverence into action. But before these liberation tools are applied, God's people must first be humbled and purged further, through the trials of Pharaoh's taskmasters' hard labor and grievious bondage.

God commands Moses to gather the elders of Israel together as One Man to go before Pharaoh, King of Egypt. Once there they are to make this proposition: “Let my people go!”

By a mighty hand, and an outstretched arm, God will make His power known by the deliverance of His people, so that they may come forth with great substance and glorious liberty.

The Antidote for Slothfulness

All men are called to some form of work. Many even seek a certain level of dominion and prosperity by which to better their lives. While some are diligent in their work, many are not. Moreover, not all men work for the advancement of God's Kingdom. To their shame, dominion righteousness is beyond their contemplation. Sadly, this malady of sloth is commonly found in those calling themselves Christian.

The Lord has covenanted and entrusted His saints with the specific and solemn task of actively and diligently advancing His Kingdom. He has carefully and comprehensively instructed us out of His Holy Word and empowered us by, His Spirit, unto devotion, piety, obedience and diligence so that we may be productive in the work of the King.

All of mankind, including the saints, have been given only a brief and finite time upon the face of the earth in which they must work. Yet, so mush of that time precious time is wasted; squandered, and thus lost forever.

At this year's end, this sermon examines the antidote for mankind's natural enemy; slothfulness.
